Our Story

Congregation Beth El (CBE) is a seasonal synagogue neatly tucked into the Connecticut shoreline of Old Lyme. Located in Old Colony Beach, just a few blocks from Long Island Sound, (a wonderful place for Tashlich), CBE is open during the summer months to welcome Shabbat on Friday evenings and for High Holy Day Services in the fall. Established in 1947 to serve the thriving Conservative Jewish community summering here, CBE offers all Jews a place to worship while away from home. CBE is run by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, from our Board of Trustee to the building manager and by our members.

From the beginning, Congregation Beth El has been a family shul. Friday Night Youth Shabbat Services have been a highlight at CBE. Hundreds of children, generation after generation, have taken a part in our services. And all children attending the service receive the coveted Hershey’s milk chocolate candy bar.

Today, CBE continues to offer services for adults and children, in which families from all denominations of Judaism participate. We’ve held B’nai Mitzvah, baby namings and yahrzeit minyans when needed. In addition, CBE offers social events such as ice cream socials, book fairs and wine & cheese get-togethers that are open to everyone in the community, not just our members. In 2019, CBE underwent its first renovation in decades. We can't wait for you to see it!

If you spend time at Old Colony Beach or if you live in the Old Lyme area, we invite you to share this special place with us.
